Tufts Middle Eastern Dance aims to expose Tufts to the rich history and beautiful artistry in Middle Eastern Dance. Through performances, classes, and workshops, we strive to build a strong community of dancers inspired by Middle Eastern Dance, and to share this passion with the rest of campus.
We offer both beginners and intermediate/advanced classes weekly throughout the year. Membership fees are $20 for beginners and $25 for intermediate/advanced per semester. The first few classes are free for new members to decide whether they want to continue taking classes.
Beginners Class
An introductory course to basic techniques and movements, the beginners class meets once a week for one hour. No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome to join! The class focuses on stretching and strengthening muscle groups most used in belly dance. In the second semester, the beginners class will use the techniques they learned previously to learn a performance piece for the spring show.
Intermediate/Advanced Class
The intermediate class meets once a week for an hour (dancers are welcome to attend the beginners class as well). People who have taken belly dance previously or feel comfortable after taking the beginners class for a year are welcome to try this class. This class focuses more on performance technique, combining isolations, and introduces the use of props like veils and swords. In past years it has included an introduction to playing zils or finger cymbals. Intermediate dancers have the opportunity to choreograph their own solos or group pieces for the spring show.
